PHILADELPHIA, PA - There's a new sports bar in Center City Philadelphia, and it will be called BarStool Sports. The digital media company has announced the ground-breaking on Instagram. The company is backed by Wyomissing-based Penn National Gaming and will eventually have a number of stand-alone locations featuring the Barstool brand. It will open in Philadelphia later this year. The new bar however will not be a betting parlor.

The bar will be located near the Ladder 15 sports bar. Penn National Gaming bought a 36% stake in Barstool Sports last year. The company is pursuing a liquor license to open a bar in Center City Philadelphia. The company has locations in 11 states and is expanding to other cities across the country. However, the Philadelphia location is expected to open earlier than its other planned locations. While opening dates have not been announced, Barstool has been around since 2011 and has become one of the most popular sports betting apps.

Penn National Gaming owns 36% of the company. This expansion is part of its plan to open several more locations in Philadelphia. In August, the company announced plans to open the Barstool sports bars in Chicago and Philadelphia. The newest Philadelphia location will be located on Sansom Street. It's unclear when it will open.
