PHILADELPHIA. PA. - The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) will begin its 2021 free seedlings and seed distribution to participating community gardens. PHS will coordinate small group, socially distanced distribution of over 75,000 organically grown seedlings and dozens of organic seed packets.

Free Organic Seedlings to 130 Community Gardens in Philadelphia Region

PHS will distribute these seeds and seedlings to 130 local community gardens in PHS’s City Harvest. The City Harvest initiative offers technical support and tools, seedlings, and supplies to assist community gardens and production sites in growing produce for donation to local food pantries or to share crops with their community. PHS supports more than 160 community gardens, production sites, and school gardens in the Philadelphia region.

PHS works to increase access to fresh, healthy food throughout the Philadelphia region, and the Community Garden programs offer resources including educational workshops, gardening supplies and materials, seedlings, access to the PHS tool library, technical assistance, volunteer assistance, and infrastructure improvements for community gardens to help them grow fresh produce. The program works with gardens at every stage—whether just getting started or long-established—to offer support services tailored to each garden and create specialized approaches to set and achieve attainable garden goals. Annually, PHS grows and distributes over 250,000 free organic seedlings to 150+ community gardens. These seedling and seed distributions are conducted throughout the spring and summer growing seasons in April, May, June, and August
