PHILADELPHIA - City officials joined local broadcasting legends Patty Jackson and Lady B to officially break ground on a $6.9 million renovation of Philadelphia's premier outdoor entertainment venue, Dell Music Center. The City of Philadelphia funded the project with support from Council member Curtis Jones (4th District), Council President Darrell Clarke (5th District), and Council member Katherine Gilmore Richardson (AL).
The Dell's legendary stage, which has hosted legendary performances from artists like Aretha Franklin, Teddy Pendergrass, and Patti Labelle for 50 years, will be rebuilt for the first time in its 50-year history. The revamped stage will boast improved acoustics, new walls and siding, and an expanded amphitheater roof.
Built in 1929, much of The Dell's original infrastructure remains. Renovations to the stage, roof, green room, backstage, and under-stage offices will be complemented by a new electrical system, improved stormwater management infrastructure, and additional waterproofing and drainage to protect the outdoor venue against warmer and wetter climates.
Visitors to Dell can enjoy renovated bathrooms with improved ADA accessibility. In addition, new water fountains and bottle-filling stations will be installed.
Bittenbender Construction is the prime contractor for this project, working alongside Fidelity Fire Alarm. Gilmore and Associates are the prime designers alongside DCM Architecture and Engineering.
Construction is scheduled to be completed by August 2023.
Due to construction, Dell plans an abridged "Essence of Entertainment" series in 2023 and will bring back some signature events. The season is scheduled from mid-August to late September 2023.
East Fairmount Park's City-run outdoor amphitheater will announce the opening dates and lineups for their abbreviated 2023 concert season in May 2023.
Season ticket holders can expect details regarding a revised package at that time.
The Dell Box Office plans to open its doors in June 2023.
