PHILADELPHIA - In the early days of television broadcasting, Philadelphia's first black TV reporter Truda Haynes made history. Haynes graduated from Howard University in Washington, D.C., and got her start in broadcast journalism in Detroit.

She became the first black woman to report on the weather on television and was the first person of African descent in the Detroit market. She also interviewed actors such as Sylvester Stallone and Denzel Washington, and Tupac Shakur.

A pioneering African American in television news, Trudy Haynes began her career in 1963 at WXYZ-TV in Detroit. She worked her way up to a reporting position at KYW-TV in Philadelphia. She was a Howard Alum and received two-lifetime achievement awards. The Emmy Award-winning journalist also covered many political campaigns during the presidential election.
